Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for July 7.
Today in 1568 William Turner died. Turner is known as the Father of English Botany, and early in his career, he set out to create a definitive list of all known English plants and animals. He was a fellow at Pembroke Hall in Cambridge, where he produced several books in the late 1530s and ’40s studying plants in their natural habitat, being as careful as he could to note down all the details.Â
He was also a Chaplain and physician, and he served several of the nobility, becoming Dean of Wells Cathedral, where he began an herb garden, and also produced books on medicine, including a New Book on Spiritual Physic from 1555. His books are filled with detailed illustrations, and are written in English so as to be available to more people, rather than the Latin which had been the norm before. He also wrote the first book in English solely about birds. William Turner died today, July 7, 1568.
