Today in 1542 Agnes Tilney, the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, was pardoned after having spent five months in the Tower of London because of her association with Katherine Howard, her step-granddaughter.
Katherine had been living in Agnes’ home when she was young, and it was here, in Lambeth, where she got up to so much trouble with her music tutor, Henry Manox, and with Francis Dereham. Agnes had been taken to the Tower in December to be questioned on what she knew about Katherine’s behavior, and what she may have kept secret. Though she would regain some of her lands, the bulk of it had been stripped away from her, including Norfolk Hall, which became the property of the Duke of Norfolk in 1543.
