Today in 1487 the ten-year-old Lambert Simnel was crowned in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland, with the name of Edward VI. In an attempt to threaten Henry VII’s throne, he was pretending to be the Earl of Warwick, who, as it happens, was still alive, and locked up in the Tower.
Henry VII conveniently procured the confused young Earl, and paraded him around so all could see that he was alive and well. Henry was actually fairly lenient on Lambert, giving him the job of a spit-boy in the Royal kitchens. Those who plotted the whole thing, though, wouldn’t be so lucky.
