Today in 1491 Prince Henry Tudor was born at Greenwich – the third child and second son of Henry VII and his wife Elizabeth of York.
Henry spent his early life not raised to be king – it was his brother Arthur who was meant to be the king. But when Arthur died suddenly, Henry suddenly became the heir, and a much more important future awaited him. Henry would rule for 37 years, would start an entirely new church, would build the English navy, and would, of course, get married six times. But for a few peaceful years when he was a small child, he was just Henry, the second son, raised in a nursery with his sisters, and taught how to write by his mother.
