Today in 1576 Levina Teerlinc died. Levina Teerlinc was a Flemish painter, who was invited to the court of Henry VIII after the death of Hans Holbein, and was actually paid more than Holbein.
She stayed on as a court painter for Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth, making her a court painter to four Tudor monarchs. She painted miniatures, which were very popular in Tudor England as a mode of dress. You often see people wearing lockets with miniatures around their necks, or hanging on a belt, and many of us have heard of more famous miniature painters like Nicholas Hillard. In an age when people didn’t have easy access to photos on Facebook or Instagram, having miniatures hanging on your person was a way to keep your loved one near, and Levina was an expert in this type of painting.
She was also a mother and a wife, and her husband traveled to England for her career – something incredibly unusual at this time!
